Comrades 2027: Build the Athlete Before You Build the Race Plan

Comrades 2027: Build the Athlete Before You Build the Race Plan

A long-distance goal can dominate an athlete’s thinking long before the race-specific training should begin.

For Comrades 2027, the date is fixed: Sunday 13 June 2027. The useful coaching opportunity is to use that long runway to build the athlete before turning every session into Comrades preparation.

Start with the outcome

“Training for Comrades” is not a sufficiently precise goal.

An athlete may want to finish, improve a previous performance, achieve a particular time or simply experience the Centenary event. Each objective creates different demands.

The first step is therefore to define what success means.

Build the qualities first

Long-distance performance depends on more than long runs.

The athlete needs consistency, aerobic development, strength, durability and the ability to absorb training repeatedly. Those qualities take time to develop.

A long runway should therefore not be filled with race-specific work from the beginning. It should be used to build the platform on which later specificity can sit.

Specificity comes later

As the race approaches, training can progressively reflect the demands of the event.

Longer race-specific sessions, pacing practice, fuelling rehearsals and terrain-specific preparation can become increasingly important.

But specificity is most useful when the athlete already has the capacity to absorb it.

Starting too specifically too early can create unnecessary fatigue and leave less room for development later in the season.

Other races still have a role

A major target does not mean every other race must be ignored.

Intermediate events can provide useful opportunities to practise pacing, assess fitness, test fuelling and learn how the athlete responds to competition.

The key is to give those races a role rather than allowing every event to become an unplanned peak.

The MCC coaching perspective

A long-range race goal should create structure, not panic.

Work backwards from the desired outcome. Identify the qualities the athlete needs. Develop those qualities progressively, then increase race specificity as the event approaches.

Athlete takeaway: don’t confuse having a race date with needing race-specific training immediately. Build the athlete first. Build the race plan second.
