Comrades 2027 Ballot: What Athletes Should Know Before Applying

The Comrades Marathon Association’s published schedule places the 2027 general-ballot application window between 9 September 2026 at 10:00 SAST and 22 September 2026 at 16:30 SAST, with the draw scheduled for 23 September. The process is not first-come-first-served, and submitting an application does not guarantee an entry.

Treat the ballot and training plan as separate decisions

The ballot is an administrative process. Training readiness is a coaching and athlete-development process. They are connected, but they should not be confused.

The Centenary edition may create additional excitement and urgency, but that is not a reason to suddenly increase mileage, add extra intensity or bring forward long runs that were not part of the athlete’s progression. Abrupt changes can increase fatigue and injury risk without improving readiness.

What athletes should do now

What athletes should not do

Do not train as though entry is already guaranteed. Do not use the excitement surrounding the Centenary race to justify an aggressive jump in training load. And do not interpret a successful ballot outcome as evidence that the athlete is automatically ready for the demands of the race.

For a long-distance event, the most useful preparation is generally progressive and repeatable. The athlete needs enough training stimulus to develop capacity, but also enough recovery to absorb that stimulus. A ballot result does not change those principles.

The MCC coaching perspective

The practical lesson is decision quality under uncertainty. Athletes can act on the information that is known—application dates, draw timing and current training status—without pretending that unknowns have already been resolved.

Apply when appropriate, monitor official communication, and continue preparing sensibly. The goal is not to create urgency in training; it is to make good decisions while the administrative process unfolds.
